Mate Masie

Rooted in the Ghanaian Adinkra symbol Mate Masie—translated as “I have heard and kept it”—Moon’s show is a meditation on what is heard, held, and repeated to foster wisdom, growth, and imagination. The symbol, which Moon has worn around her neck for the past two years, serves as both a guiding philosophy and an anchor for this body of work.

“These basketball cards are affirmations and aspirations,” Moon shares. “The meditations I hear, keep, and repeat. What we consume physically, mentally, and emotionally are the things we say to ourselves. The repetitions are deposits into my embodied knowledge. The repetition is god.”

This collection showcases over 300 small, hand-drawn basketball card-style artworks—each one a unique reflection of internalized wisdom. The exhibition also features a sculptural installation of an interior door adorned with a basketball hoop, two large-scale photographs and a zine inspired by the iconic Eastbay magazine, offering a fresh take on storytelling through a nostalgic sports lens.
