“Everything now, we must assume, is in our hands; we have no right to assume otherwise.”
— James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time (1963)
There is a willing unconscious materiality of what we do with and in the environment. “Après nous, le déluge,” the title of Sinisa Kukek’s series including, DEUS SIVE SPHAERA, meaning “after us, the flood” or “do what you will after I die,” reflects this sentiment. The visual materiality of a burnt forest, a white washed building, eroded maps, or even a casket addresses death as a potential for new emergence, meanwhile, an absence still looms. The absence in the face of that potential is the ground for things still standing. Those separated from us, class war proclamations, and meconium secretions are all signifiers of what still stands in that absence, interrupting the blank space left after.
